Dream of biking in the country on pleasant Wisconsin summer afternoon? The
bright blue sky above and pavement rushing below you. Feel the wind fly
through your hair as you pedal taking in the beauty of trees and nature around
you. For people living with SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) a long bike ride in
the country is just that; a dream.
A genetic neuromuscular disease that robs a person the use of their muscles.
Daily tasks like combing hair or eating can be difficult or impossible to do on
their own. Breathing complications like a cold or pneumonia can be very
serious for people with SMA.
There are many degrees of severity of this complicated disease; some walked
early in their lives, others never crawled or rolled over on their own. Many
children born with SMA don't live to enjoy adulthood and others live into
adulthood despite the difficulty of this disease.
Even those who live in motionless bodies have active minds and personalities.
